On The Sensational Helmholtz - Introduction
On the Sensational Helmholtz
Helmholtz (1821-1894) is generally regarded as one of the foremost scientists and intellectuals of the world
in the 19th century. In his native Germany, and even in other countries, he has been celebrated at every 50 years
cycle after his birth and his death. His centennial in 1921 was honored by several ceremonies, academic and
bibliographical productions, as much as in 1971, when both Germanies held parties for him, including the
emission of postal stamps and other homages.
In 1994, many books and papers were published as an account of his various theories generated in different fields,
which are still highly influential today.
Finally, 2021 is the 200th anniversary of Hermann von Helmholtz, his first celebration in the 21st century.
We expect to contribute in a limited but systematic way, with the elaboration of several products and events
that aim at identifying and conveying his countless contributions, mainly to music acoustics, musicology
and auditory perception.
A transdisciplinary working group of scholars from more than six countries was gathered, with the initial task
of producing a book on Helmholtz's actuality. This book is proposed to ser as the basis of an audiovisual
pedagogical series in 12 episodes.
A whole ensemble of about 20 musical instruments and other sounding objects is being joined, including some
specially conceived creations, to demonstrate the music acoustical principles discovered or described by Helmholtz.
These instruments and several devices developed by Helmholtz will constitute a portable and interactive
exhibition, for people of all ages, on his legacy to the science and art of sound.
The Sensational Helmholtz executive and consulting group is still being formed, with specialists from
9 countries so far (Germany, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Australia, USA, Canada, Brazil and Argentina) , under the general coordination of professors Malte Kob (Germany, Detmold University of Music-
ETI Sound Engeneering Institute) and Leonardo Fuks (Poland/Brazil, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro).
